The Debates Over Using A Gray Water Tank

Gray Water Tank
Let us first determine just exactly what a Gray Water Tank is.  Gray Water is reusing water from the house such as laundry water, dish water, bath water, and rain water.  Let's say that you took a small plastic bucket and put it in the bathtub to catch the shower water. Then the water that was caught in the bucket can be used to flush the toilet or to water your plants. That is the same thing as a Gray Water Tank.
Gray Water Tank
Gray water is stored in a tank, generally underground, that can then be reused for irrigation.  There are many rules to using a Gray Water Tank and can be dangerous if not properly used.  This is where the debate comes into effect. The lack of knowledge surrounding the handling of Gray Water Tanks has led to not only environmental risks but health concerns as well.   Some of the health concerns can be such as hepatitis, bacterial and viral problems, and even typhoid fever.  Gray water is primarily meant to be used for irrigation and flushing of the toilet.  If the Gray Water Tank is not properly installed with some form of filtration for laundry detergents, fibers, particles and even grease. So what exactly is the benefits of using a Gray Water Tank then if it could cause serious health concerns?  Studies show that by using a Gray Water Tank could save 25-40 percent of drinking water for consumption.  This then means we would require less of water purification and sewage treatment facilities.  If there was a drought, then gray water would be available for irrigation and toilet flushing.

So when using a Gray Water Tank there are several items that one should remember: Gray-water should never sit for an extended time without using in the tank. If you smell a foul odor than you need to dispose of the water.  Do not use softeners for water treatment. Over a time frame, this could harm the soil. Do not use laundry soap or cleaners that have boron in it.  Make sure that you have a bypass system installed to catch cleaners, thinners, and solvents.  There should also be a grease catcher also installed.  Things that you want to avoid are: Do not drain swimming pool water into the tank, apply the water to the soil only,  and do not drink the water.

Always check if there is any odor coming from the tank. If it is there, flush and clean the tank. Other wise it will lead to potential damage. Maintaining clean and healthy environment is good for health.

It is not recommended to put bleach in the tank. If you do so it might kill the bacteria inside the tank which is important to break down waste. Make sure the debris and food are away from the sink.

If you have any valve closing issues, leave the tank open till the waste water moves out and fill it with clean water and flush. That will solve the issue.

It's a nice post there. I am using 40 sierra cbra from 1 year. I follow the same steps mentioned here. It really gives good results. I am having trouble closing the levers though.

Before dumping the tank, make sure there are no leaks or spills. Other wise it will lead you into another cleaning section. I clean my gray water tank once every month.
